Recognized annually on September 20, National Concussion Awareness Day is a chance to start a conversation and increase concussion awareness, raise funds for charitable organizations dedicated to brain injury and show support for those affected through social media, community events and press coverage.

Since 1992, October has been celebrated as National Physical Therapy Month, a time to honor and celebrate all the physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs) across the United States. This month-long celebration is a tribute to the professionals who help patients regain their quality of life and an opportunity to educate the public on the critical role PTs and PTAs play in healthcare.

In this David Strauss Clinical webinar, Dawn Neumann, Ph.D., FACRM will describe newly identified factors, known as negative attributions, that significantly contribute to anger and aggression after brain injury. Dr. Neumann will demonstrate two assessments that can be used to clinically evaluate a patient’s tendency toward negative attributions and describe a new clinical approach for treating anger and aggression associated with negative attributions called Intervention to Change Attributions that are Negative (ICAN). In this Butch Alterman Memorial webinar, Nick Prefontaine shares his brain injury survival story. He suffered a brain injury in a snowboarding accident and was in a coma for three weeks. His parents were told that he probably wouldn’t be able to walk, talk, or eat on his own ever again. Capturing analyzable data about clinical care as a by-product of care is a foundational component of learning from practice in a learning health system. But capturing meaningful data that can be analyzed may require focused implementation efforts. Cognitive-communication disturbance following traumatic brain injury (TBI) has historically been well characterized, along with recommendations for assessment and treatment. Approaches often focus on underlying disorders of attention, memory, and executive functioning and their impact on communication behaviors, especially in the chronic stages of recovery. Another cognitive domain, language, is often underrecognized in these approaches, and recommendations for management in the acute stage of neurorehabilitation are lacking, leaving clinicians in the inpatient rehabilitation setting with uncertainty about how to work with this population.
