A New Clinical Approach to Treating Anger after Brain Injury

In this David Strauss Clinical webinar, Dawn Neumann, Ph.D., FACRM will describe newly identified factors, known as negative attributions, that significantly contribute to anger and aggression after brain injury. Dr. Neumann will demonstrate two assessments that can be used to clinically evaluate a patient’s tendency toward negative attributions and describe a new clinical approach for treating anger and aggression associated with negative attributions called Intervention to Change Attributions that are Negative (ICAN). Learning Objectives: Explain what negative attributions are and their relation to anger and aggression after brain injury. Discuss assessments that can be used to evaluate patients for negative attribution style thinking. [...]

Taking the First Step, No Matter How Small

In this Butch Alterman Memorial webinar, Nick Prefontaine shares his brain injury survival story. He suffered a brain injury in a snowboarding accident and was in a coma for three weeks. His parents were told that he probably wouldn’t be able to walk, talk, or eat on his own ever again. He utilized a system, the S.T.E.P. system, to not only make a full recovery but run out of the hospital. S.T.E.P. stands for: Support, Trust, Energy, and Persistence. Learn how anyone can use the S.T.E.P. system to get through their trauma and thrive.

Connecting Practice to Data: Implementation Strategies to Increase Collection of Core Outcome Measures in an Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility

Capturing analyzable data about clinical care as a by-product of care is a foundational component of learning from practice in a learning health system. But capturing meaningful data that can be analyzed may require focused implementation efforts. In this research webinar, Emily Evans, PT, DPT, Ph.D., and Stacey Zalanowski, PT, DPT, will describe the process undertaken by one inpatient rehabilitation facility to improve the collection of performance-based physical function outcome measures included in a core set of outcome measures recommended by the American Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy. They will describe the process using the Exploration, Preparation, Implementation, and Sustainment (EPIS) [...]

The Neuroanatomy and Assessment of Language Disturbance in TBI

Cognitive-communication disturbance following traumatic brain injury (TBI) has historically been well characterized, along with recommendations for assessment and treatment. Approaches often focus on underlying disorders of attention, memory, and executive functioning and their impact on communication behaviors, especially in the chronic stages of recovery. Another cognitive domain, language, is often underrecognized in these approaches, and recommendations for management in the acute stage of neurorehabilitation are lacking, leaving clinicians in the inpatient rehabilitation setting with uncertainty about how to work with this population. In this clinical webinar, Kim Frey, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, CBIS will review findings from a 3-year study investigating acute post-traumatic [...]
