The Neuroanatomy and Assessment of Language Disturbance in TBI

Cognitive-communication disturbance following traumatic brain injury (TBI) has historically been well characterized, along with recommendations for assessment and treatment. Approaches often focus on underlying disorders of attention, memory, and executive functioning and their impact on communication behaviors, especially in the chronic stages of recovery. Another cognitive domain, language, is often underrecognized in these approaches, and recommendations for management in the acute stage of neurorehabilitation are lacking, leaving clinicians in the inpatient rehabilitation setting with uncertainty about how to work with this population.
